Speech & Debate Club/Team is open to students in grades 5 – 8 who have an interest in improving their oral speaking skills and who have at least a B- in behavior and a C in all academic subjects. It is the perfect vehicle for improving oral speaking skills and becoming proficient speakers who are able to address an audience with poise and confidence. The team competes in approximately five events a year. The venues change depending on the school host. The competitions are day long events, and students can participate in one or two categories at each event. The category list and guidelines can be obtained in the 5th grade homeroom. Students choose their own material subject to coaches’ approval. Parent supervision throughout the day of the event is required. Appropriate dress is a must-no mention of school or name. Students are expected to exhibit role model behavior at all events. The speech team annual fee of $50.00 covers entry fees for all tournaments. Students may choose to compete in one or two events at each tournament.
(Students may choose site reading and improv only after preparing a memorized piece.) Parents are required to supervise students the day of the event and serve as or provide judges (high school student or above).
